Ten Tips On How To Save Money At The Gas Pump This Summer

Take a look at your wallet; it’s probably pretty beaten up. In the past, we consumers have endured a roller-coaster ride with regard to the price of gas and maximizing your MPG (miles per gallon) is more important than ever. But don’t throw in the towel just yet because we are about to get your wallet back in the ring. Here are some tips that will help you in your effort to maximize your vehicle’s MPG:

  • Keep a check on the tire pressures, especially when taking long trips. Underinflated tires are dangerous and one of the worst MPG killers.
  • Change that dirty air filter. Imagine running a 5K race with a plastic bag over your head. Your engine feels the same way.
  • Be sure to service and tune up your engine as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Make sure the brakes are adjusted properly because excessive drag from sticking components can add extra work for your engine.
  • Service your transmission every 15,000 miles or once a year; the petroleum-based fluid will break down over time and not properly cool or lubricate. And don’t forget about the transmission filter (if applicable for your vehicle).
  • Lighten your load by keeping only what you need in your vehicle. Do not pay a premium at the pump just to haul around unnecessary weight.
  • Make sure to use the recommended fuel for your vehicle. Higher-end vehicles usually require premium fuel, so check your owner’s manual.
  • Avoid filling up when you see the gas truck refilling the ground tanks. During this time water and sediment are stirred up and may find its way into your tank.
  • When filling up your tank stop at the first click, don’t try and top off the tank. Doing so may damage your evaporative emission control (EVAP) system which can lead to costly repairs.
  • Use a gas treatment additive to help control moisture, protect your fuel system, improve engine performance, and replace lost octane points. Not all additives are created equal, so do your homework and read reviews.
