Memory Lane: What was your first car?

8/30/2017

What was your first car? That question probably sparks a lot of memories. Maybe your parents gave it to you. Maybe you had to work three jobs to save enough money to buy it. Maybe you got a hand-me-down from an older sibling.

I bet you can remember more details about your first car than you can about what you did last Tuesday. As American drivers, our first car is a rite of passage. We asked our team what their first cars were and any stories they can remember about them.
ALVIN AND DON
Alvin’s first car was a 1967 Chevy Impala Super Sport 2 door. All these years later he can still describe it better than the salesperson on the showroom floor could. It was unique in that it had a 3 speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission when most of these cars came with a 2 speed Powerglide transmission. We still haven’t gotten a straight answer on how often he lit up the rear tires.

Alvin is the oldest of the three brothers, Don is the middle child and he got Alvin’s first car. But he wasn’t stuck with it for long. He soon got into a 1973 Plymouth Fury Station Wagon and then into a 1973 Chevy Caprice Classic 2 door. By this time, Don and Hope were newlyweds and Hope ended up crashing the Caprice soon after and they both still chuckle to this day when they share the story.

HOPE
Hope’s first car was a 1973 Toyota Corolla 2 door. She remembers the color vividly which was called butterscotch, an aptly selected color for the early 1970s. She also said you could fill up the fuel tank for $5 and drive forever.
JONATHAN
Jonathan’s first car was a truck. A 2000 Ford Ranger with a manual transmission and Ford Mustang rims to be exact. Being that it was orange he called it The Sweet Tator. He got it with 100,000 miles on the odometer and drove it all over the southeast US. The odometer had over 225,000 miles on it when he parted ways with it.

NELSON AND LLOYD
Nelson and Lloyd had different first cars but the only difference was one year. Literately everything else was the same. They were white Ford Crown Victorias with 5.8L V8 engines that were both former police cars. Nelson’s was a 1989 and Lloyd’s was a 1990. And these were just two of the four Ford Crown Victorias in the household at the time, Alvin (their dad) had a blue 1989 (also former police car) and his wife had a light blue 1990 (not a former police car, it only had a 5.0L V8 engine).
