Going over the river and through the woods? Make sure your car is READY

10/30/2017

Whether you’re driving a short distance or across the country, the team at Harrell and Beverly have some tips for preparing your car and your family for your holiday road trips!

TIPS FROM ALVIN & DON
  • Prepare your vehicle for the trip! Schedule a checkup and basic maintenance or necessary repairs ahead of time.
  • For long trips, make sure you have enough supplies if you get stuck on the side of the road for an extended period of time. Items like water, snacks, flash lights, blankets, and a cell phone are great to have on-hand if you are stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.
  • If you are going where you haven't been before, plan out the route in advance so you know where you are going and don’t end up looking like a Family Circus cartoon. Thanksgiving traffic can cause quite a delay and it's always good to know about alternative routes.

TIPS FROM JONATHAN
  • Inspect and service your vehicle weeks before your trip. Don’t wait until the last minute as everyone else will be doing the same.
  • If it is raining hard, don’t turn on your flashers while driving. Flashers indicate a distressed vehicle on the side of the road.
  • It is the passenger’s job to hang their arm out of the window to get truckers to honk their horn. The passenger must also say, ͞"Honk, honk," when moving arm up and down to get truckers attention. (Maybe we'll just leave that one to Jonathan.)

TIPS FROM LLOYD
  • Check tire pressures as outside temperature changes can change the pressures inside your tires.
  • Check cooling system to make sure it is working correctly and that coolant is in good condition; deteriorated coolant or a poor working cooling system may not provide adequate heat.

TIPS FROM HOPE
  • Check out vehicle beforehand of course. (We can do that!)
  • Allow plenty of time for potty breaks and food stops - don't rush yourself!
  • Have some car games handy. Classics like I Spy and the License Plate Game will keep passengers occupied.
  • Enjoy the trip! Don't let the rush and stress of travel overwhelm you.

Make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape for the holidays!
